How to report a PayPal scam

• Forward the whole email, or the text message, then delete it: [email protected]

Then get the fake site taken down: report the phishing link.

What PayPal says

• PayPal says its messages will always use the full name listed in your PayPal account. Greetings like 'Dear user' or 'Hello, PayPal member' are suspect.
• PayPal says a real PayPal email shows its logo and a checkmark in your inbox view, in email apps that support it such as Apple Mail, Gmail and Yahoo.
• PayPal says account info, passwords and validation codes are for you only. Even a customer service rep should not ask for them.
• PayPal says do not call back a number given in an automated call. Contact PayPal only through its Help Center contact page or customer service at 1-888-221-1161 (US).
• PayPal says to forward suspicious emails and texts to [email protected], and it will investigate.

What fake PayPal messages look like

• Messages with impersonal greetings such as "Dear user" or "Hello, PayPal member"
• Fake websites with addresses very like the real one
• Automated calls with spoofed caller ID asking you to call back
