Get your money back after a scam

Act now. The first hours matter most, and some rules have strict time limits. Answer four quick questions and you get the steps in order, with the deadlines that apply where you live. We also write the letters for you.

It's not your fault. Scams are built to fool careful people. Rules last checked 17 October 2026.

Anyone who offers to get your money back for a fee is almost certainly a second scam.

People who have lost money are often targeted again by fake "recovery" agents, lawyers, hackers or officials who promise to get it back. The US Federal Trade Commission says anyone who asks for an upfront fee to get your money back is a scammer, and government agencies never charge to help with a refund. The FBI's IC3 says it never asks for payment to recover funds. Canada's Anti-Fraud Centre says never send recovery money. Reporting to your bank and the police is free.

2. How did the money go?
3. Did you make the payment yourself?

This matters. In most countries banks have stronger duties when money is taken without your permission than when you were tricked into sending it.

The first payment, or when you first saw money missing. Your best guess is fine.

This is not legal advice

These are the published rules; your bank's terms decide. Rules differ for each bank, card and payment app, and they change. If anything here differs from the official page, the official page is right. For advice on your own case, ask a free advice service or a lawyer.

How we made this page

On 17 October 2026 we read each rule on the regulator's, government's or ombudsman's own page and only listed what we could confirm there. Each step links to the page we checked. Where a rule only covers money taken without your permission, we say so. ScamX is not a bank, a law firm or a recovery service, and we never charge for help. Spot something out of date? Tell us.
