Investment Scams

The pitch is always the same: high returns, no risk, act now. Real investing is never any of those things. Here's how these scams run, and how to get out before you pay.

How an investment scam works

It usually starts warm. A message on WhatsApp, a dating app, or a slick ad. Someone shows you screenshots of profits. You put in a small amount and, on cue, it "grows." That first small win is the hook. It's fake.

Then you're encouraged to invest more. When you try to withdraw, the excuses start: a "tax," a "fee," a "verification deposit." Pay it and there's always another. The money was never invested. It went straight to the scammer.

Common types

  • Crypto and "trading platform" scams. A fake app or site shows a rising balance you can't cash out.
  • Pig butchering. A long, friendly relationship that slowly steers you into an "investment opportunity."
  • Ponzi and "guaranteed return" schemes. Early payouts come from new victims' money, until it collapses.
  • Fake celebrity or brand endorsements. Ads that borrow a famous face to look legitimate.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed or fixed high returns. No real investment can promise that.
  • Pressure to act fast, or a "limited slot."
  • You can see profits but can't withdraw them.
  • You're asked to pay a fee or tax before you can cash out. That's the tell.
  • The company isn't registered with the regulator, and the "manager" only talks on chat apps.

Check before you invest

Two minutes now saves your savings. Verify the firm is registered with your regulator (the SEC in the US, SEBI in India). And scan the website or app link before you touch it.

Scan a suspicious investment site or app link. If it's a known scam, ScamX flags it.

What to do if you already paid

Stop sending money, even if they promise the next payment unlocks your funds. It won't. Call your bank to try to reverse or freeze the transfer. In the US, report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov, the FBI at ic3.gov, and the SEC at sec.gov/tcr. In India, call 1930, file at cybercrime.gov.in, and report investment fraud to SEBI at scores.sebi.gov.in.

Frequently asked questions

They showed me real profits. How is it fake?

The dashboard is software the scammer controls. The numbers go up because they type them in. It's a screenshot of a lie.

Can I get crypto back?

It's hard, but report anyway and fast. Exchanges can sometimes freeze funds if you flag the receiving wallet quickly, and your report helps build the case.
