How to report a phishing site to MarkMonitor Inc.

To report a phishing or scam site to MarkMonitor Inc., email [email protected] or use MarkMonitor Inc.'s abuse web form.

Domain registrar: can suspend the domain name itself.

MarkMonitor (written "Markmonitor" on its own site) is a domain registrar for large organisations. Its About Us page says it helps enterprises manage and protect their domain portfolios, including many of the world's best-known brands, and gives a correspondence address in Meridian, Idaho, USA.

Before you report, look up the domain in WHOIS or RDAP: the registrar field should read "MarkMonitor Inc." (IANA ID 292). If it names another company, report there instead.

MarkMonitor's rules are in its Abuse Policy, written to meet the 2013 ICANN Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA). It says it keeps an abuse contact for reports about domain names it sponsors, with a web form, an email address and a US phone number.

How to reach them

  • The domain must be one MarkMonitor sponsors; check WHOIS first
  • Complaints must be in writing and specific

Reporting to MarkMonitor Inc., step by step

  1. Confirm that MarkMonitor Inc. is the registrar of the scam domain. MarkMonitor says complaints must pertain to a domain name for which it is the registrar.
  2. Open MarkMonitor's Abuse Complaint Form at corp.markmonitor.com/domain/ui/abuse-report. MarkMonitor describes it as its form for reporting DNS abuse on the domains it manages.
  3. Fill in Contact Details and Your Email, then pick "Phishing" as the Report Type. Other choices include Malware, Botnet, Pharming, Criminal Content and Other.
  4. Write out the exact domain names and full URLs of the scam pages, and add your supporting evidence.
  5. If you cannot use the form, email [email protected]. MarkMonitor also lists (208) 685-1750 as its abuse phone number, but it says it must receive every complaint in writing for verification, so put a phone report in writing as well.
  6. If your complaint is mainly about what the website says or shows, MarkMonitor's form says to contact the hosting provider or site operator first. Report to the host as well as to MarkMonitor.

What MarkMonitor Inc. asks you to include

  • MarkMonitor asks for specific domain names, URLs and supporting evidence so it can process the report.
  • Its policy says abuse complaints must be well-founded and actionable. Explain clearly how the domain is used for phishing, for example which brand it copies and what details it tries to collect.
  • Keep your report about the domain name. MarkMonitor notes that complaints about email or other online services run by the domain's registrant most likely do not count as domain name abuse.

What MarkMonitor Inc. can do

  • MarkMonitor says it investigates each allegation of abuse in a secure way that does not threaten its systems.
  • It may, at its sole discretion, tell its customer (the domain's registrant) about the alleged abuse.
  • It may also work with that customer to resolve the abuse.
  • MarkMonitor says it will respond appropriately to abuse complaints.

What MarkMonitor Inc. cannot do

  • MarkMonitor points out that the registrant, not the registrar, owns the domain name.
  • MarkMonitor only handles complaints about domains it sponsors. It cannot act on a domain held at another registrar.
  • MarkMonitor says it is not required to take any action that goes against applicable law.
  • MarkMonitor's response may or may not include a reply to you, so you may not hear back.

What happens after you report

  • MarkMonitor says it tracks abuse complaints through its internal filing process.
  • It keeps records of each report for two years and will give them to ICANN on reasonable notice during that time.
  • Any action it takes may not be reported back to you, because MarkMonitor says its response may or may not include a reply to the person who complained.
  • MarkMonitor says well-founded reports of illegal activity from law enforcement, consumer protection or similar authorities designated by the government where it is based are reviewed within 24 hours by someone empowered to act. It gives no review time for reports from the public.
