How to report a scam call or text

Reporting does two things. It helps get the number blocked, and it feeds the databases that warn everyone else. Pick your country.

In the United States

  • Report the call at reportfraud.ftc.gov. If you lost money or gave up personal details, say so, it changes how it's handled.
  • Forward scam texts to 7726 (it spells "SPAM"). Your carrier uses these to block senders.
  • Add your number to the free Do Not Call registry at donotcall.gov. Legit telemarketers must honor it, so anyone who calls after is likely a scam.

In India

  • Report the suspicious call or SMS on the Chakshu tool at sancharsaathi.gov.in. It's built for exactly this.
  • Lost money? Call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in immediately, speed decides whether the funds can be frozen.

Signs a call is a scam

  • They called you, then asked you to verify yourself. Your bank already knows who you are. Hang up and call the number on your card.
  • Pay a fee to claim a prize. Real prizes never cost money up front.
  • Pressure and secrecy. "Stay on the line, don't tell anyone." That's the whole scam.
  • Odd payment methods. Gift cards, crypto, or a "safe account." No government or bank works that way.
  • A recorded voice, or a number that shares your area code. Both are cheap to fake.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call the number back to confront them?

No. Calling back confirms your number is live and can trigger more calls, or premium charges. Report it and block it instead.

They already have my name. Am I in danger?

Names and numbers leak in data breaches all the time, so on their own they're low risk. What matters is what you gave on the call. If you shared an OTP, card, or bank detail, act now: call your bank and change passwords.

Can I block the number for good?

Block it on your phone, and report it (7726 in the US, Chakshu in India) so the carrier blocks it at the network. Scammers rotate numbers, so blocking plus reporting beats blocking alone.
